The Maitland Rams will go into this weekend’s clash against front runners Gosford with renewed confidence following a six-goal victory on Sunday night.
Matt Hooson hit the scoreboard for the Rams against Wests.
Playing the late game at Newcastle International Hockey Centre, the Rams piled on the goals for an 8-2 win over Wests in round 18 of the Hunter Coast Premier Hockey League.
Ben Urquhart opened the account for Maitland before skipper Matthew Brown and Matt Hooson made it 3-0 at half-time.
The Rams let Wests back in the game after the break and the margin was reduced to two before a double to Nathan Baker, who returned from a lengthy injury-forced stint on the sidelines, and a short corner conversion from Hooson were part of Maitland’s five second-half goals.
Baker said the Rams took their opportunities in front of goals despite being largely outplayed by Wests.
“To be honest, we were probably outplayed by Wests in terms of possession and we were forced into a counter attack style,” Baker said.
“We were good enough to finish a few of those, but they have a lot of young, talented players who will do well if they can stay together for a couple of seasons.”
The Rams are third on the ladder with three rounds remaining, one point ahead of fourth-placed Norths.
Maitland will be away on Sunday to Gosford, who now sit alone on top of the rankings after Souths slipped to second with a loss to fifth-placed Entrance.
