INVESTIGATORS have laid fresh gun and drug offences against an Armidale man who was arrested during a random vehicle stop.
Daniel Shane Brian Federici did not appear in Tamworth Local Court yesterday when seven fresh matters were mentioned but the court heard the charges stemmed from a raid on a Brown St home.
The 42-year-old has been in Tamworth Correctional Centre since he was arrested in Armidale seven days ago.
Yesterday, New England crime manager Detective Inspector Ann Joy told The Leader the seizure of more than 1.4kg of cannabis in a vehicle stop at a service station on the New England Highway at Armidale had triggered the raid.
“As a result of executing that, police from the Target Action Group based at Armidale and local Armidale detectives seized a shortened .22 pump action rifle, some ammunition, namely .22 cartridges and other assorted ammunition together with ammunition for a starter pistol,” she said.
“There was some false identification seized during the course of the warrant.”
According to court documents, Federici is facing fresh charges of possessing an unregistered firearm, shortened firearm, unauthorised firearm, not keeping a firearm safely, possessing false document to influence public duty and a second count of supplying a prohibited drug.
The cannabis and its packaging, which was seized from an esky in the vehicle stop will now undergo further forensic examination.
One man, who was a passenger in the vehicle, has been released without charge as investigations continue.
Detective Inspector Joy said the investigation was sparked by a proactive policing and should serve as a warning to those involved in drug supply in the New England.
“This was as a result of police proactively out there patrolling the streets, checking vehicles in suspicious circumstances,” she said.
“Drug supply is a constant focus because it does have its links to other sorts of offences such as property crime.”
Federici remains bail refused and will return to court next week.
