Newcastle couple Shay and Dean are one of five couples tackling the octagonal former Hotel Saville in Melbourne’s South Yarra. Dubbed the ‘‘Blocktagon’’, the 1960s building is sure to be a gruelling renovation for the five teams.

High school English and drama teacher Shay, 29, and electrician Dean, 30, have been together 14 years and have a two-year-old daughter Everly. Together they have renovated two houses and describe their style as Scandinavian influenced. They are hoping any prize money will fund some land near Newcastle where they can grow their own food.

The couple are the latest Hunter region team to appear on the hit NBN TV show. In 2014, Newcastle couple Maxine Stokes and Karstan Smith were married on the reality TV show before taking home $40,000 at auction.

In 2012, East Maitland couple Brad and Lara Cranfield took home more than $600,000 when they won The Block.
